DE-ADDICTION TREATMENT

There is a huge number of individuals who are self-medicating themselves with various substances to manage their underlying sleep disorders (they may or may not be aware of it) and thus getting into the realm of addictive behaviours comprising of consumption of various sleeping pills/ alcohol/ prescription medications/ opioids etc or behaviours like late night internet surfing/ video gaming etc. We intend to provide help to these individuals while providing guidance and treatment so that they can come out of these vicious loops and regain their full potential in a healthy and satisfying life style.

Deaddiction treatment has evolved over the years into a structured treatment programme with specific goals and objectives customised for the individual, thereby helping him/ her to achieve a balanced, productive and healthy lifestyle.

It has moved way ahead from its murky past of forceful confinement in shady rehabilitation centres and physical punishments, as neuroimaging and brain cognitive functioning research done over the last couple of decades provide evidence that addiction is a brain disorder, involving soft malfunction of certain key brain areas resulting in faulty executive functions, judgement and decision making, which in turn lead a person to initiate, maintain and unable to move away from addictions.

Our deaddiction services start with detailed history taking and motivation assessment. After initial work up, treatment setting (outpatient/ intense outpatient/ inpatient) is decided after discussion with patient and family members as per clinical need. Once begun, treatment primarily involves three stages- detoxification, maintenance and relapse prevention. Treatment usually lasts from months to couple of years and frequency decreases as patient keeps on improving. All the stages involve recent, relatively safer medications and psychotherapy.

The focus of treatment remains respect and care of the patient as an individual suffering from a brain pathology, with empathetic handholding throughout the treatment process rather than denigrating him/her for taking substances and rebuking him/her for weak personality/ voluntary misdemeanour.
